Issue
Boater access to many of Ohio's inland lakes may be unreasonably restricted under current state laws and/or local ordinances.
Status
No study of this issue is being conducted on this issue at this time.
Background
An examination of Ohio's takes, excluding Lake Erie, reveals that a startling 70% of the inland waters of Ohio have limited boater access. These restrictions are almost always by placing a limit on the engine horsepower allowed on the lake. In southeast Ohio, nearly all the lakes are restricted to either electric motors or 10 or less horsepower engines. It is estimated that these restrictions deny the overwhelming majority of Ohio boat owners' access to these waterways.
BAO Position
A careful examination of the justification for the current restrictions on any of Ohio's lakes should be undertaken. Where it is found there are no justifiable reasons, such as environment or safety concerns, for restricting Ohioans' access, the restrictions should be modified or eliminated. Where it's determined there is a basis for restriction, the methods of restricting should be examined and modified to provide more access.
Action You Can Take
