Increase in Registration Fees/Deputy Registrar Fees

Issue

It is necessary to look ahead to other sources of increased revenue for the Ohio Waterways Safety Fund, besides the percentage of the gas tax being allocated to the Fund. Future funds will be needed to support continued facilities expansion, etc.

In 2005, there was talk by the Ohio Clerk of Courts Association to move the registration of watercraft from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Watercraft to the Ohio Department of Public Safety's Bureau of Motor Vehicles; however, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources did not agree to this.

BAO Position

Since registration fees are the other major source of money for the Ohio Waterways Safety Fund, BAO believes:

  1. A reasonable increase in registration fees must be supported in the next year or two
  2. An increase must also be supported for the Deputy Registrar fees from $3 to $5

BAO does not agree that the registration of boats should be moved the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Action You Can Take

Tell legislators the registration of boats should remain with the Division of Watercraft.
